Sella d’argento / Silver Saddle / Silbersattel (1978)

Thanks to Pieter Boven for the screenshots from the MAWA DVD.

The Blu-Ray from Koch Media has two different versions included on it. As far as I can tell there really is nothing different in the movie itself, the difference is only the amount of filters used. The main movie version (what you get when you press play) is filtered way too much for my tastes and looks absolutely horrible. Some might like it though. You can find the more film like transfer of the movie, which looks great to me (and very grainy), in the extras section. Would have been better with the proper version as the main one (and with more space used for it as the filtered one is over 21GB and the extra at around 18GB) and the filtered version buried deep in the extras… but perhaps I should be grateful and happy that they included the good one at all?
There is a very very small amount of image cropped at the top and bottom from the filtered version.

The DVD by Koch Media obviously is worse than the Blu-Ray but in my opinion it actually looks quite good on my current screen (24″ full hd) when in motion. Of course not nearly as good as the Blu-Ray but still maybe good enough for some that are wondering if they should upgrade their DVD. And I prefer the DVD over the filtered crap.

But the contrast… to my eyes the Blu-Ray versions have a bit too much contrast on them, yet the DVD has maybe too little? I like how the Blu-Ray has somewhat more color in the image but the darker areas are a bit too dark as some of the detail that is visible on the DVD is not there on the dark areas of the Blu-Ray. Oh well.

The old German DVD by MAWA/Best Entertainment seems useless now.

Take the mouse cursor over the links over the screenshots to make the different images to load and appear (it might take some time depending on your connection speed so don’t panic and take the cursor elsewhere). Javascript required. You can see bigger (1920×1080) images of the Koch disc screenshots (both Blu-Ray and DVD) by clicking on the links (the small ones won’t show much difference).
